The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is developing a caller ID system similar to the Truecaller app. This new mechanism will display KYC-based names on users’ phone screens when they receive calls. Unlike Truecaller, Trai’s system relies on user consent and KYC data, which enhances accuracy and transparency. It’s a promising step to combat spam calls and phishing attacks in India. The Trai system prioritizes privacy by relying on user consent and KYC data. When a call is received, it displays the caller’s name based on this information. Unlike Truecaller, which aggregates data from various sources, Trai’s approach ensures transparency and accuracy while safeguarding user privacy. To provide consent for Trai’s caller ID system, users will likely need to opt in explicitly. Details on the exact process haven’t been released yet, but it’s expected to involve a straight forward setup within the phone’s settings. Trai aims to prioritize user privacy while enhancing caller identification accuracy. Trai chairman PD Vaghela confirmed that work on the new system will begin soon.
