Hyderabad: In a major announcement that has sent shockwaves through Andhra Pradesh, the state government has revealed that electricity charges are set to increase. The burden of these charges is expected to fall heavily on the residents. Discoms (distribution companies) have proposed an additional Rs 11,826 crore under the true-up charges for fuel adjustment for the fiscal year 2023-24. These proposals have been submitted to the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC), which has made them public. The ERC has invited written objections to these proposals by November 19.

Previously, the ERC had approved Rs 6,200 crore in fuel adjustment charges for the year 2022-23. However, left parties and electricity consumer associations have expressed strong objections to the new proposals. They have criticized the move, stating that increasing prices would place an even greater burden on the public. The opposition parties and consumer associations have made it clear that they strongly oppose any further price hikes, emphasizing that it would adversely affect the people of Andhra Pradesh. The state is now bracing for the impact of these new charges, as the debate continues over the fair distribution of electricity costs and the accountability of the government’s actions.
