The growing culture of philanthropy has been breaking down barriers between the developed and the developing countries and helping address the widespread inequalities in access to higher education that is available more to the sections that are in command of adequate resources.

Strengthening public institutions is considered to be the only way out to ensure the socio-economic wellbeing of the posterity. It has to be a shared commitment of the State as well as the prosperous communities. Such a culture would help develop new sectors, innovation and add to the improved productivity.

Valuing the voluntary action for the common good and showing genuine gratitude to the institution to which he owed his growth, Dr. Krishna Chivukula, an alumnus of IIT Madras, and an American Industrialist has made a donation of ₹ 228 crore to his alma mater. This is one of the largest single donations ever received by the institute.

This remarkable act of generosity should have been acknowledged with a mention of it at the 78th Independence Day celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have better ways for fulfilling the obligation. Dr. Chivukula, who hailed from Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh, studied aerospace engineering at IIT Madras in the 1970. After completing his M.Tech, he moved to the United States, where he pursued an MBA at Harvard University. He went on to establish several successful companies, including Shiva Technologies Inc. and Indo MIM Pvt. Ltd., specializing in advanced mass spectroscopy and metal injection molding.

His donation will support scholarships, research, and infrastructure at IIT Madras, including the establishment of the Krishna Chivukula Block on campus. Dr. Chivukula was inspired by the culture of philanthropy he observed in the United States, where many successful business leaders donate to their alma maters.
