A massive landslide at Chooralmala near Mepadiin the Wayanad district during the wee hours of July 30 buried a large area under debris killing at least 156 people. Several people have gone missing. The landslide has resulted in multiple deaths and many people are feared trapped under the debris. So far, seven bodies, including that of a child, have been recovered. The heavy rainfall has also caused a flash flood, washing away a bridge and complicating rescue efforts. A 20-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is on-site, and additional teams are being mobilized to assist in the rescue operations. It’s a tragic situation, and rescue efforts are ongoing. The landslide was primarily caused by heavy and continuous rainfall. The intense rain saturated the soil, making the slopes unstable and leading to the landslide. Additionally, the region’s topography and land-use patterns have made it more susceptible to such events.
