In a major setback to Congress government in Telangana, the Supreme Court of India has directed the State to replace Justice L. Narasimha Reddy, investigating power purchase agreements and power projects implemented in the state during the tenure of the former Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao.
Justice Narasimha Reddy was the retired Patna High Court Chief Justice. He was appointed as the one-man Commission to conduct the Inquiry.
This decision came after the Supreme Court raised concerns about the impartiality of the judge following his public statements. The government is expected to announce the new judge soon. A writ petition filed earlier by K Chandrasekhar Rao against the Narasimha Reddy Commission in Telangana High Court was rejected. Consequently, the moved Supreme Court on the issue. The Supreme Court of India raised issues after Justice Reddy made public statements about the ongoing investigation into power purchase agreements and power projects in Telangana.
These statements were seen as potentially prejudging the matter, which could compromise the fairness of the inquiry. The court emphasized the need for procedural fairness and the appearance of justice being done, leading to the decision to replace him. Justice Narasimha Reddy has tendered his resignation relinquishing from the responsibility in the wake of the directions of the Supreme Court.
