Anwarul Azim Anar, a three-time Awami League MP from Bangladesh, who arrived in Kolkata on May 12, for medical treatment has fallen prey to honey traps. He was killed, skinned and chopped in a gruesome manner. He had reportedly stayed with his long-term associate, Gopal Biswas, in a house in north Kolkata’s Sinthi area after his arrival in India. On the next day, Anar claimed to be going for a medical check-up but instead entered an upscale gated community in Kolkata’s New Town area with two men and a woman. His companions were seen leaving the complex at different times between May 13 and 15, carrying large bags. Anar was not seen exiting the complex.
A search conducted by officials revealed blood stains in the apartment, but no body was found. According to investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Bangladeshi authorities, Anar was allegedly smothered to death within hours of entering the apartment on May 13. His body was then dismembered, packed into bags, and removed from the premises. The washroom was cleaned with acid to erase evidence of the crime. Police suspect that Anar may have been lured into the New Town flat by a woman and then murdered by contract killers. Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder.
