Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of New Delhi was granted bail on Thursday by a court in the capital after he was arrested in a bribery case in March. Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested weeks before India’s national election, where he was one of the challengers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Despite his arrest, Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power for a third straight term earlier in June. Kejriwal’s arrest was widely condemned by opposition parties, who saw it as a political move against one of Modi’s fiercest opponents during the election.

The federal Enforcement Directorate accused Kejriwal’s party and ministers of accepting 1 billion rupees ($12 million) in bribes from liquor contractors nearly two years ago. Kejriwal denied the accusations, calling them a political conspiracy. His party is part of a broad alliance of opposition parties called INDIA.
