In Andhra Pradesh, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister and president of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), is indeed facing a challenging electoral battle.  Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP and N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are closely matched in terms of voter outreach for both Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

Despite this, he faces a formidable challenge from a newly strengthened alliance, backed by Prime Minister Modi. While Jagan’s bus yatra generated buzz in his favor, in north Andhra districts (such as Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam), YSRCP candidates are facing tough competition from the NDA. The election dynamics are complex, and the outcome remains uncertain. As voters head to the polls, both Jagan Mohan Reddy and his opponents are vying for their support.

Jagan’s welfare schemes may give him an edge. He has been emphasizing the state’s controversial Land Titling Act of 2023, assuring farmers full rights over their lands and transparency. Jagan Mohan Reddy is relying on a social engineering strategy to offer hope to marginalized communities and disenfranchised voices across the state.

The Andhra Pradesh assembly polls have been closely watched, and Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), has been at the center of attention. Here are some key points regarding the calculations in favor of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in the AP assembly polls

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Schemes:

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government implemented several DBT schemes during its tenure. These schemes directly transferred cash to beneficiaries, including old age pensions and free healthcare under Aarogyasri.

The Chief Minister highlighted that his government distributed approximately  Rs 2.3 lakh crore to below poverty line (BPL) families over the last five years. The success of these schemes could influence voters’ perception of his governance.

Pre-Poll Survey Predictions:

A comprehensive pre-poll survey conducted by ELECSENSE predicted that Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy would win the 2024 election with 122 MLA seats and a 49.14% vote share, thereby retaining power after the state’s truncation2.

The survey results indicate strong public support for the YSRCP. The YSRCP is likely to secure over 47% of the votes, while the TDP-Jana Sena alliance is projected to receive over 44%3. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party has a significant lead in terms of vote share. Economic Impact and Borrowings:

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s extensive borrowings to fund welfare schemes have been a point of discussion. While these schemes have benefited many, economists express concerns about the financial burden.

If the YSRC wins, it may encourage other parties to adopt similar dole-centric governance models, despite potential economic challenges. In summary, the YSRCP’s focus on DBT schemes, positive pre-poll predictions, and substantial vote share contribute to the calculations in favor of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in the AP assembly polls123. The election results will determine whether these factors translate into electoral victory.

In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) emerged as the clear winner. They secured a landslide victory by winning 151 out of the 175 seats in the Assembly. The incumbent Telugu Desam Party (TDP) managed to secure only 23 seats1. The JanaSena party won just one Assembly constituency. So far as the  Lok Sabha seats are concerned, YSRCP won 22 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while the TDP won only three, including Guntur, Vijayawada, and Srikakulam.
