BRS Raises Alarm Over Potential Threat of Union Territory Status for Hyderabad

Hyderabad, January 5, 2026 – In a dramatic and tearful address to the Telangana Legislative Council on Monday, former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha announced her resignation from the post, describing it as her “final speech” in the House.

She launched a scathing attack on the BRS leadership, accusing the party of lacking internal democracy, ethical standards, and support during her personal struggles.Kavitha, daughter of BRS president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), became emotional as she recounted her political journey and the challenges she faced within the party.
“I am leaving as an individual, but I will return to the legislatures as a stronger force,” she declared, swearing on her two sons that her departure was not about assets but about self-respect.Key

Highlights from Kavitha’s Speech:Criticism of Party Leadership: She alleged that KCR was unaware of the “misdeeds” committed by leaders below him.

Kavitha questioned why senior leaders remained silent when KCR was criticised, asking, “What is the worth of a party that cannot protect KCR?”
Opposition to Name Change: She openly stated that she never agreed with renaming the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), questioning what the party achieved in Telangana before venturing into national politics.

Lack of Support During Legal Troubles: Kavitha expressed pain over the party’s failure to stand by her when the BJP-led central government sent her to jail in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. “I fought alone against the ED for three years,” she said.

Direct Attack on Harish Rao: In a sensational remark, she accused senior BRS leader and former minister T. Harish Rao of corruption, calling the party’s constitution a “big joke” and describing BRS as a party without morals.

Allegations of Internal Conspiracy: Kavitha claimed that questioning issues within the party led to vendetta against her, including her suspension without explanation. She highlighted specific failures, such as poorly constructed collectorate buildings in Siddipet and Siricilla that collapsed after one rain, unaddressed promises to Telangana movement activists, and irregularities in sand mining and the Bodhan sugar factory.

Future Plans: She announced that her organisation, Telangana Jagruthi, would transform into a full-fledged political party to contest upcoming elections, emphasising the need for a new force focused on people’s interests.

Kavitha had submitted her resignation from the MLC post and BRS primary membership in September 2025 following her suspension from the party amid internal rifts. The resignation was pending acceptance until the current Council session, during which she requested and was granted time to speak. Her speech has intensified discussions on family and leadership dynamics within the BRS, with Kavitha vowing to continue public service independently. Political observers note that this marks a significant split in the Kalvakuntla family, potentially reshaping Telangana’s opposition landscape ahead of future elections.
