India expels Canadian diplomats, withdraws its high commissioner

This drastic move was made in response to allegations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government, which suggested that Indian diplomats were involved in the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has vehemently denied these claims, branding them as baseless and politically motivated.

In a significant diplomatic escalation, India has withdrawn its High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats from Canada. Moreover, India has expelled six Canadian diplomats, including Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler and Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert. These diplomats, along with four other high-ranking officials, have been given until October 19th to leave the country.

This drastic move was made in response to allegations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, which suggested that Indian diplomats were involved in the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has vehemently denied these claims, branding them as baseless and politically motivated.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that the baseless targeting of Indian diplomats in Canada was wholly unacceptable and expressed a lack of faith in the Canadian government’s commitment to their safety. This move underscores the escalating tensions between the two nations and represents one of the lowest points in their bilateral relations.

Diplomatic standoff heightens tensions

The severance of diplomatic ties is likely to have several significant impacts. The immediate effect is the disruption of diplomatic communication and cooperation. While economic ties might not be directly affected, the diplomatic standoff could create an uncertain environment for businesses and investors, potentially harming trade relations. The heightened political tensions could also influence India’s relations with other countries, especially those allied with Canada, leading to a re-evaluation of diplomatic strategies and alliances.

Additionally, public perception in both countries may be affected, with citizens viewing each other with increased suspicion and hostility. This complex situation has far-reaching consequences for both nations.
