Surging floodflow, Srisailam gates thrown open

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu will fly to Srisailam project to take part in the “Jala Harathi” a ritual ceremony celebrating the nature’s bounty gifted to the humanity. The river goddess, fondly called ‘Krishnamma’ will be worshipped on the occasion.

The surging flood flows in Krishna River have filled four of its major irrigation projects – Almatti, Narayanapur, Jurala and Srisailam full to their brim. It has three more dried up downstream projects in AP to be gratified. Srisailam, a project jointly owned by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States was the fourth one to open its gates to let off the flows as it was left with hardly any flood cushion to retain water. Its inflows from Krishna and its tributary, Tunga Bhadra were stable at over 4.6 lakh cusecs.

Ten out of 12 radial crest gates of the Srisailam Project were opened (In the early hours of July 31, 2024) . The project which has a gross storage capacity of 215 tmc, could build up its storage levels up to 210 tmc with the huge inflows received in less than a week, thans to widespread frains in Krishna cathments in Karnataka and Maharashtra States.

The Srisailam project is discharging close 4 lakh cusecs into the river thus adding to the inflows of Nagarjuna Sagar project, while AP and Telangana have sarted drawing over one lakh cusecs to feeds its projects.
