The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has passed a resolution recommending that Rahul Gandhi be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. This position holds significant privileges and responsibilities, and it’s noteworthy that Rahul Gandhi comes from India’s famous political dynasty. His great-grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, was the first prime minister of independent India, and both his grandmother and father also served as Indian prime ministers. Despite not winning a general election for his party, Rahul Gandhi remains a prominent face in the opposition due to his political background. If he assumes this role, he will  lead the opposition in the lower house of India’s parliament.

The  Indian National Congress (INC) achieved a remarkable turnaround in the last  election. It has improved the Strike Rate. The INC’s overall strike rate (seats won to seats contested) surged to 30% in 2024, compared to 8.3% in 2019 and 9.4% in 2014. In head-to-head contests against the BJP, their strike rate reached 29%, up from 8% in 2019 and 12.2% in 2014.

The INDIA bloc, led by the INC, formed alliances with various opposition parties. Despite initial challenges, they managed to field candidates across 543 seats. In around 350 seats, they presented a single candidate against the BJP. The INC’s flexibility and willingness to accommodate partners contributed significantly.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi played a pivotal role. Their spirited and well-coordinated campaigning strategy helped the INC surpass its 2019 tally, securing 99 seats in the Lok Sabha.

The INC’s strategic alliances, improved strike rate, and effective campaigning contributed to their impressive revival from the lows of 2014 and 2019.
