Hyderabad is no longer the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, Hyderabad was designated as the joint capital for a period of ten years. However, this period has now ended, and Hyderabad will become the sole capital of Telangana.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh, which was expected to establish its own system of governance as well as its new capital, has yet to accomplish the task. There is a clamor for continuing Hyderabad as the common capital for at least another five more years.

During this transition, several buildings in prime locations within the twin cities, that had previously been in the possession of Andhra Pradesh, were taken over by the Telangana government. Notably, some buildings housing Schedule IX and Schedule X institutions will remain with Andhra Pradesh, while others will be vacated. The issue of retaining certain buildings is still pending resolution between the two states.

This change marks a significant milestone in the separate governance of AP and Telangana, as they each move forward with their distinct administrative centers.
