Parvez Tak, the stepfather of the late Bollywood actor Laila Khan, has been sentenced to death for the murder of Khan and five other family members. The verdict was delivered by Mumbai Sessions Court’s Judge Sachin Balvant Pawar. The case was deemed to fall under the “rarest of rare” category, justifying the capital punishment.

The tragic events unfolded in 2011 when Laila Khan, her siblings, cousin, and mother were killed at their Igatpuri bungalow near Nashik in Maharashtra. Tak, a resident of Kashmir, was arrested on July 8, 2012, on charges of murdering Ms. Khan, her elder sister Azmina, twin siblings Zara and Imran, cousin Reshma, and mother Shelina. The police investigation revealed that Tak and Selina argued over her property, leading to the brutal murders. The bodies of the victims were later recovered from the farmhouse.

Motive – The main reason behind the crime was a property dispute. He resorted to the killings because he felt they all “treated him like a servant” and feared abandonment. The family disappeared from Mumbai in February 2011, sparking speculation about their possible locations. The discovery of two vehicles belonging to Khan in Jammu & Kashmir led investigators to suspect Tak.

Tak, a road contractor from Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir, was charged with murder after six skeletons were found at the family’s farmhouse in July 2012. The prosecution had examined around 40 witnesses during the trial against Tak, and the public prosecutor sought the death penalty, emphasizing the planned and brutal nature of the crime. Such cases serve as a grim reminder of the devastating impact of violence within families and the pursuit of justice in our legal system.
