As part of a full-scale anti-Maoist operation launched by the security forces in the South Bastar region ( Chhattisgarh), as many as 12 naxalites of the banned CPI-Maoist organisation were killed in an encounter on May 10 (2024). The Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav said that an encounter took place between the police and Maoists at different places in the forest of Pidiya during the search operation.

Led by the People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) of the CPI- Maoist company No 2 commander, Vella and Gangaloor Area committee Secretary, Dinesh Modiyam a platoon of the armed Maoists were engaged reportedly in a training practices in the jungle, some 40 kms away from the local police station.

A joint force of security personnel from DRG Bijapur, DRG Dantewada, DRG Sukma, Bastar Fighter, STF and Cobra 210, 202, 85 CRPF swooped on the naxalite camp resulting in a pitched battle  that lasted nearly two hours. As the guns fell silent on both the sides bodies of 12 naxalites were found on the spot while rest of them could flee the jungle camp.

The security forces recovered large quantity of explosives, Maoist uniforms, drugs and propaganda material of the organization. Bodies of the slain naxalites were being moved to the district headquarters of Bijapur for post mortem and identification. In fact the security forces have been on a month-long hunt in Bastar forests bordering with Telangana and Odisha for two top leaders including Hidma, who were spearheading the operations of the banned extremist outfit  in Chhatisgarh.

As many as 29 naxalites were killed in a major encounter with police in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh on April 16 and ten more were killed in Narayanpur district of the state on April 30. Over 100 naxalites were killed in the anti-Maoist operations taken up by the state so far this year.
